Do you want to add a simple, easy-to-install fountain to your yard? Here are answers to all of your questions, including “How does a solar fountain work?”, “How do you set one up?” and “How do you clean it?”…

1. What is a Solar Fountain and How Does it Work?
Solar fountains are powered by the sun instead of using electricity. Typically, they have pumps that use solar panels to collect energy from sunshine, and therefore you don’t need to run electrical power out to them.
As long as the solar panel receives sunlight, the pump circulates the water in the fountain. Solar panels can sit outside the fountain (usually connected with a wire), or they can float on top of the water.
People often choose to install solar fountains because they are easy to set up, require little maintenance and typically cost less to set up and operate.
2. Do Solar Fountains Require Electricity?
No, they can run completely off solar power. As a result, you don’t need to plug them in, nor do you need to pay for electricity. Consequently, these fountains need to be placed in a sunny location. Plus, they usually shut off 1-2 hours after sundown.
3. How Long Does a Solar Fountain Last?
On average, these devices last several years as long as you maintain them. They don’t require much maintenance, but you should regularly check the pump to ensure that is stays free of debris.
You also don’t want the fountain to go dry, as that can ruin the pump as well. So, keep your basin full of clean water as much as possible, and you can extend the lifespan of your pump and fountain.
I noticed that my solar panel slightly discolored over time from sun exposure, but it stills works perfectly fine.
4. Are Solar Birdbath Fountains Easy to Install?
Many solar birdbaths are super simple to set up and generally cost between $50 and $100 for all of the materials. In fact, you can easily build one yourself with a floating bird bath bubbler.
Basically, you just need a birdbath or some sort of large, shallow bowl or tub. Then, fill the container with water and place the solar bubbler in the water.
Make sure that you set up your fountain in an area that receives adequate sun, and the unit will continue to run on its own. You will notice that it automatically turns itself on sometime in the morning and shut off sometime after dusk.
And since these birdbath fountains aren’t tethered to an electrical power source, you can move them much more easily if you want.
5. Do Solar Birdbaths Work in Cold Weather?
Yes, your fountain will still operate as long as the water doesn’t freeze and the solar panel receives enough sunlight.
6. Can You Use a Solar Fountain Indoors?
Typically solar fountains only work outside, and they are designed to work as such. However, if you can set up the solar panel outside of a window or in a very sunny indoor location, you may be able to power the pump.
7. How Often Should I Clean My Birdbath Fountain?
This will depend on how dirty the water gets, and if leaves fall in the water. Generally, I like to check the pump once a week and wipe away any debris accumulation.
I also add algae clarifier to the water to keep it clear and free of algae and mosquitos. Just a few drops every couple weeks does the job for me. That said, you may need to add clarifier more or less frequently.
8. Are Solar Fountains Safe for Birds?
Yes, birds love fountains. You can see some of my favorite solar fountains for bird baths here. In addition, the algae clarifier I mentioned above is safe for wildlife, including birds and pets. However, not so much for mosquitoes or algae.
